Microdosing Basics
On-Day (Dose Day)
What is an on-day?
An on-day is any day in your microdosing protocol when you actually take a dose. It's the active component of your schedule — the day when the substance is in your system and you're paying close attention to how you feel, think, and function.
Most microdosers take their dose first thing in the morning, ideally on an empty or lightly filled stomach, to maximize absorption and avoid potential sleep disruption from late-day dosing.
What to expect on an on-day
If your dose is properly calibrated (sub-perceptual), an on-day should feel like a slightly better version of a normal day:
- Mildly elevated mood
- Slightly sharper focus and mental clarity
- Greater presence and engagement with tasks
- Subtly enhanced creativity or problem-solving
- Occasionally, mild physical sensations in the first 30–60 minutes (slight warmth, tingling, or lightness)
If you experience any of the following, your dose is too high:
- Visual distortions or enhanced colors that are hard to ignore
- Difficulty concentrating on normal tasks
- Feeling "spacey" or disconnected
- Emotional intensity that disrupts functioning
How to optimize your on-days
Morning routine
- Take your dose at a consistent time — consistency helps with tracking
- Empty or light stomach — improves absorption and reduces variability
- Set an intention — even a simple one like "I want to be more present today"
- Avoid caffeine for the first 30 minutes — let the microdose settle before adding stimulants
Throughout the day
- Track your experience at 2–3 checkpoints (morning, midday, evening)
- Rate key metrics: mood (1–10), energy (1–10), focus (1–10), creativity (1–10)
- Note anything unusual — both positive and negative
- Maintain normal routines — don't radically change your day to "test" the microdose
Evening
- Reflect briefly — what was different about today?
- Log your dose details — substance, amount, time taken
- Note sleep quality — microdoses (especially LSD) can occasionally affect sleep if taken too late
On-day dos and don'ts
Do:
- ✅ Take your dose at a consistent time each on-day
- ✅ Go about your normal activities
- ✅ Track your experience throughout the day
- ✅ Stay hydrated and eat well
- ✅ Exercise if it's part of your routine (many report enhanced workouts)
Don't:
- ❌ Take your dose late in the day (especially LSD — its long half-life can disrupt sleep)
- ❌ Combine with alcohol or other substances
- ❌ Skip meals (low blood sugar + microdose can cause anxiety)
- ❌ Drive or operate heavy machinery until you're confident in your dose calibration
- ❌ Judge the entire practice based on a single on-day
On-day patterns to watch for
Over several weeks of tracking, you may notice:
- Consistent uplift → Your dose and protocol are well-calibrated
- Diminishing effects → Tolerance may be building; consider more rest days
- Anxiety on dose days → Your dose may be too high, or you may have an underlying anxiety pattern that needs attention
- Best days are transition days, not on-days → This is common and normal. Many people find the "afterglow" effect more pleasant than the on-day itself
