A US survey found the highest reported rates of adverse effects among ibogaine and 5-MeO-DMT users, including cardiac symptoms and thoughts of death or suicide.

The cross-sectional study included 1,964 US adults from the 2025 National Survey Investigating Hallucinogenic Trends. Past three-month adverse effects were reported by 94.8% of ibogaine users and 92.8% of 5-MeO-DMT users, with heart palpitations or chest pain reported by 44.2% and 51.3%, respectively, and thoughts of death or suicide by 59.3% and 36.6%.
