Afterglow

What is the afterglow?

The afterglow is a residual period of subtle positive effects that persists after the primary pharmacological action of a microdose has ended. It typically lasts from several hours to a full day after dosing, and is most clearly experienced on transition days — the day after an on-day.

Unlike the on-day effects (which may include a subtle "edge" or heightened awareness from direct receptor activation), the afterglow tends to feel:

  • More natural and organic
  • More integrated into your normal experience
  • Less like "being on something" and more like "being at your best"
  • Characterized by warmth, openness, and ease

Many microdosers consider the afterglow their favorite part of the practice — it represents the substance's effects settling into a natural, sustainable elevation.

What causes the afterglow?

The afterglow is not fully understood, but several mechanisms likely contribute:

1. Downstream neurochemical effects

Even after the psychedelic molecule is metabolized, downstream changes in neurotransmitter systems may persist. The initial 5-HT2A receptor activation triggers cascading effects on glutamate, dopamine, and other systems that take time to return to baseline.

2. Enhanced neuroplasticity

Psychedelics promote the growth of new neural connections (synaptogenesis). This structural remodeling continues after the substance is cleared, potentially contributing to lasting mood and cognitive changes.

3. BDNF elevation

Psychedelics upregulate brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF), a protein that supports neuron survival and growth. Elevated BDNF levels may persist beyond the acute pharmacological window.

4. Psychological momentum

The afterglow may also have a psychological component: the shifted perspective from the on-day carries forward through memory, intention, and behavioral momentum. A good day tends to set up the next good day.

What the afterglow feels like

Common afterglow experiences reported by microdosers:

  • Mood: Gentle elevation, sense of well-being, more patience
  • Cognition: Clarity of thought, less mental clutter, easier decision-making
  • Creativity: Ideas flowing more freely, novel connections between concepts
  • Social: Warmer interactions, more empathy, better listening
  • Emotional: Greater equanimity, less reactivity, ability to "sit with" difficult feelings
  • Physical: Relaxed body, less tension, may feel more embodied
  • Perception: Subtle appreciation of beauty — colors slightly more vivid, music slightly more moving

How to track and leverage the afterglow

Tracking

  • Rate your mood, energy, focus, and creativity on transition days with the same metrics as on-days
  • Note specific afterglow experiences in your journal
  • Compare transition day ratings with on-day and off-day ratings over time
  • Look for patterns: does your afterglow last 1 day or 2? Is it stronger with certain doses?

Leveraging

  • Schedule creative work on transition days if you notice enhanced creativity during afterglow
  • Have important conversations when you're in an afterglow state — the natural empathy and openness can be valuable
  • Practice integration — the afterglow provides a reflective, clear-headed state ideal for journaling and self-examination
  • Exercise — many report that physical activity during afterglow feels particularly enjoyable and effective

Afterglow vs. lingering effects

It's important to distinguish between a positive afterglow and unwanted lingering effects:

Afterglow (positive) Lingering effects (concerning)
Subtle mood elevation Persistent brain fog
Gentle openness Emotional overwhelm
Natural-feeling clarity Difficulty concentrating
Fades gradually Persists for days

If you experience negative lingering effects, your dose may be too high, or you may need a longer break.
